CBD | Comprehensive guide for new patients

So we all heard about CBD as its trend has taken over the internet and news over the last few years. I’ve come across a lot of advertisements and websites promoting CBD, but the majority of them didn’t really explain exactly how CBD works and why it can help with many health conditions. For those of us who are struggling with mental illness but failed most prescription medications, the fact that CBD oil could potentially help with our symptoms seems like a light at the tunnel that we needed to see. Unfortunately, I am that person who failed most prescriptions medications. So, researching and getting a better understanding on CBD was definitely worth it for me, and I also feel that it is worth sharing with others who might consider this route of treatment because it gives them hope and another option for treatment.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol, which is a natural compound found in hemp plants such as marijuana. Most people associate marijuana with its recreational use to get high and often assumes that CBD does the same. However, CBD is different in that it will not produce a sense of feeling high/euphoric, and it is also not addictive.Β medical marijuana

How does CBD work in the body?

The first thing we need to know is that our body actually produces certain cannabinoids on its own. There are two receptors for cannabinoids, called CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are mainly present in the brain and also found throughout the body. CB1 receptors in the brain are responsible for movement, mood, pain, cognitive function, appetite, etc. On the other hand, CB2 receptors are found in the white blood cells, spleen, and tonsils, and they are related to inflammation and pain. CBD works by directing the body to use more of these cannabinoids instead of directly attaching to them, and it also produces its effect by promoting the body to be in the state of homeostasis.

What are the benefits?

CBD has been proven to aid the treatment of

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Schizophrenia
  • Arthritis
  • Pain
  • Epilepsy
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Acne
  • and more

Is CBD legal?

As of 2019, CBD products derived from hemp is legal nationwide while ones derived from marijuana is only legal in some states. Currently, there are ten states where the use of cannabis is entirely legal for both medicinal and recreational purposes, and they are Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.

Any side effects?

There are no significant side effects reported in adults, and CBD seems to be well tolerated at different dosage levels. However, some people reported tiredness, diarrhea, and some changes in appetite.

For anybody who is considering CBD oil and has other medical issues, I highly recommend consulting a qualified health care professional to ensure safety and effective treatment.

Routes of administration

CBD products come in a few different forms, which include oils, edibles, topical, concentrates, and more, and they can be taken orally and topically. These CBD products also come in different dosages, and it is recommended to start at the lowest dosage and increase as needed. Because there is a lack of FDA regulation over CBD products, it is also recommended to seek advice from qualified health care professionals to determine appropriate dosing.

Where can I get CBD products?

As CBD became popular and gained its reputation for effectiveness to treat a wide range of conditions, there are now many companies producing CBD oils and other CBD related products. Because there is a lack of FDA regulation over these products, it is important to do thorough research and make sure you purchase yours from a trusted company. Unfortunately, I’ve purchased a few CBD topicals and oil from a local dispensary without researching their brand and company in the past, and I did not get any symptom relief from them and ended up wasting my money.

For those of you who have exhausted all the other options for treatment and would like to give CBD oils a chance, here are some places you might want to look into to check out some quality CBD products.
